New Vuuch Profiles

profileToday, well OK over the weekend, we updated the server with some new features around profiles.  Now you can add some cool things like a picture…  Also you can now view other people’s profile.  Look in your contact list and you can see the profile of anyone on your list that is a Vuuch user.  Your contact list contain Vuuch users and non Vuuch users (“email contacts”).  If you want to see someones profile that is not a contact then use the add contact button and search for someone and you can see the profile of anyone in the list.  We are looking for ideas of how you would like to discover other Vuuch users.  For instance if you create public discussions, would you like to see all other people who create public discussions?

New Release of Vuuch (WEB Portal and Add-ins)

vuuch-logo-nameWe just released a new version of the Vuuch.  To check these out please uninstall your old add-in adn install the new add-in.  You can find the add-ins at www.vuuch.com/download. There are some great new enhancements, all things you have been asking for:

  • User profile – Each user can now maintain a simple profile.  While the current implementation is simple it is the start of some interesting developments.
  • Contacts – The management of contacts has been greatly improved.  Now you can maintain contacts that are NOT Vuuch users.
  • Public discussions – Instead of closing a conversation to a small group of your contacts you can now open the discussion to everyone on the WEB.  Public discussions are made available to anyone that wants to extract them using the Vuuch open API.  For instance you can see public discussions being posted at www.vuuch.net.  Any comment made at www.vuuch.net is feedback to Vuuch.  So the next time your have an engineering question or a question of how to do something in your application just create a Vuuch public discussions.
  • WordPress addin – Anyone running a WordPress based site can extract Vuuch public discussions using this addin.  The code is available for open use and modification.  So if you would like to modify this code to work with say PHPBB then you are free to do.
  • HTML widget – If you would like to host Vuuch public discussions on your WEB site then use our HTML widget.  You can see an example of this here on the blog or generate your own widget.
  • Multiple image – Now add as many images as you want to a discussion.  While creating a discussion or replying to a discussion you can snap an image of the screen.  If you find an image you don’t like or don’t need just right click the image and delete it.
  • Image names – As you create iamges you can use the default names or type any name you want.  Now your image name makes sense.
  • Reply from email – A little known feature that has worked for a while is reply by email.  Those people you invite to discussions can just hit reply to the email the get from Vuuch and the reply is connected to the discussion.  There are a few limitations with this.  At this time you cannot add people to the reply nor can you add an attachment to the reply.

Keep the feedback coming.  Thanks to all those beta users for giving us things to work on.

Industrial Strength Technology

industrialstrengthWhat does Industrial Strength mean and are the tools you use everyday industrial strength?  I heard this term at PTC/USER this week to describe Sharepoint.  When I heard this my first thought was about the tools I use everyday and “if” they would pass as industrial strength.  Actually the first tool I though of was WordPress (I wondered if the person I was speaking to would classify WordPress as industrial strength).  Certainly something that is open source could not be industrial strength or how could something that is in the cloud be industrial strength?  Well I was intrigued enough to google a bit.  My first surprise was that wikipedia does NOT contain the term for anything other than something about potato chips…  My next search, shown below, tells me that it is software that is fault tolerant.  Well this really confused me relative to Microsoft.  Certainly the Microsoft tools I use everyday are not industrial strength (well certainly not the 64 bit Vista I am running).

…………………..Just restarted the post because my Internet Explorer just crashed…  So what happened to the WordPress post I was writing?  It was still in the cloud and available.  Onward…….

So what about cloud applications or SAAS applications?  If something is delivered to me as an internet application it certainly cannot be reliable or secure.  Well this we know as false.  At Vuuch like many places we use www.saleforce.comwhich as we all know is in the cloud.  I have never had a quality problem with the solution and I am sure larger places than Vuuch have determined security is non issue.

  • Conclusion
Microsoft it is NOT a measure/guarantee of industrial strength!
Cloud or SAAS solutions can be industrial strength!
Open Source can be as industrial strength as something you pay for!

So I guess what this person was trying to tell me about Sharepoint would need more validation then just being from Microsoft.

Public Discussions

manhoopWe are testing the first release of Vuuch Public Discussions. Any discussion created using the SW add-in or the Pro/E add-in can be made public. There are a few hoops to jump through to do this, but this is the first release.  To make a Discussion Public go the the WEB UI and open the Discussion and then edit it.  There you will see a selection for “Public”.  Once the Discussion is Public it will then be made availble to any forum that wants it.  Currently we are testing a WordPress add-in over at www.vuuch.net and Ben is giving it a try over at www.projott.com.  Both blogs will post SolidWorks and Pro/E questions.  This will change once we are out of test mode.

Other things will change as well.  For instance you will be able to create a public discussion from any UI and will not need to go and edit the dsicussion and you will be able to specify the type of discussion.  For example is it a tips and tricks discussion about Solidworks or is it an engineering question.  Currently the beta passes no image over and this will be fixed shortly…  After completing the WP add-in we will create add-in for other forum solutions like vBulletin and PHPBB.  OH YA the WP code is open source so if you want to extended it feel free!

Let us know what you think and if you know of any sites that should use this like eng-tips.com or www.solidjott.com then let us know and let them know…

Once a Discussion has been made Public and has been placed in a blog or forum any comment/reply made in the blog/forum will be sent back to Vuuch.  So next time you have a quick engineering question or a tips & tricks question, don’t leave your tool jsut create a Vuuch Public Discussion.  See you at Pro/USER!
